    Defence Export Controls (DEC) Information Session

    9:00am-1:00pm on Tuesday 13 August 2024 


    The Department of Defence, supported by the Victorian Government, are hosting an information session to discuss the new Defence Trade Controls Amendment Act 2024, coming into effect in 1 September 2024. The session will cover:

    • An overview of Australia’s current Defence export control framework.

    • Key changes introduced by the Defence Trade Controls Amendment Act 2024, including new offences, exemptions, record keeping, and the AUKUS licence-free environment.

    • Available support to help you adapt and comply with the new legislation.

    • An overview of the Safeguarding Australia's Military Secrets legislation.

    • A view of cross-government roles relating to trade control and security measures.

This is a unique opportunity for you to engage with SNC Corporation.     SIAA is delighted to announce that registrations for Southern Space 2024 are now open!  

    Southern Space 2024 will be hosted in person at the Hotel Realm, Canberra from Wednesday 21 August to Thursday 22 August. This year’s conference will delve into how Australia and the world must adapt to a changing geopolitical, economic and strategic context, highlighting the pivotal role of the space sector in enabling a more secure world.  

    Southern Space is a pivotal space sector event, uniting prominent space sector voices across industry, academia and government, alongside both national and international thought leaders.

    Expressions of Interest are now open to participate in the Australian industry delegation to Indo Defence Expo & Forum 2024 held at Jakarta, Indonesia from 6-9 November 2024.

    Interested companies can apply to attend by completing the EOI form by 11:59pm AEST Friday, 02 August 2024, through the ICN webpage Gateway by ICN.

    Companies are reminded to submit their EOI by the closing date, as we are unlikely to extend or re-open these opportunities.

    As part of the TDA delegation, companies will receive free space on the custom-built national pavilion, providing a platform to showcase and demonstrate your capabilities face-to-face with the foreign delegations, and industry partners. Additionally, delegates will receive services to maximise participation at the show, including; pre-event support, market advice and business-to-business matching through Austrade's network of business advisers.

    As part of the Australian Defence Export Office, TDA is the national platform for Australian defence industry to showcase their goods, services, technologies and solutions at international trade events.

    For companies selected to attend an international trade show as part of the TDA industry delegation, TDA will provide:

    • Free space on the custom-built TDA pavilion
    • Exhibitor passes
    • Pre-event support and advice
    • Senior Military support and advocacy
    • Access to facilities and meeting rooms
    • Briefings, networking and B2B matching
    • On-site support from TDA representatives at the trade show

    Companies wishing to join a TDA delegation as an ‘Exhibitor’ are requested to commit at least two attendees to the show to ensure they have a presence on the pavilion at all times. This will be strictly enforced where TDA Exhibitor capacity is over-subscribed.

    Defence Industry Development Grant (DIDG) 2024

    The Defence Industry Development Grant (DIDG) program guidelines have been released by The Hon. Pat Conroy MP, Minister for Defence Industry. Eligible Australian businesses can begin preparing an application to any of the four streams which include Sovereign Industrial Priorities, Exports, Skilling, and Security.

    Up to $39 million in grant funds annually will support businesses to procure new capital equipment, achieve international certifications, improve technical skills or uplift business security which is needed to operate within the defence sector.

    The program will open for applications tomorrow and will remain continuously open. Initial batch opportunities for the Exports and Skilling streams will close on 31 July 2024 and initial batch opportunities for the Sovereign Industrial Priorities and Security streams will close on 31 August 2024.

    The inclusion of a customer Letter of Support has been introduced for some streams to allow applicants to demonstrate relevant commercial relationships and likely demand for their products or services within the defence sector. Potential applicants should allow extra time for liaison with their relevant customer to ensure a detailed letter can be tailored to support the proposed grant project, which will be assessed against other competitive proposals.

    Global Victoria is partnering with the Australia-Korea Business Council to deliver a market and cultural briefing session for businesses working in the Advanced Manufacturing and Defence sectors.

    Victorian companies from these industries that are engaged with the South Korean market are encouraged to register an expression of interest to attend.

    The session will include a market briefing and cultural capability training to support you in developing skills for working cross-culturally with South Korea.

    AMDA Online will be hosting representatives from the Australian Department of Defence, UK Ministry of Defence, US Department of State, US Department of Defense and US Department of Commerce to present on the new AUKUS trilateral licence-free environment for defence exports. 

      

    This will include detailed presentations and insightful discussions about: 

    ·         Australia’s national exemption for the UK and US provided under the Defence Trade Controls Amendment Act 2024; 

    ·         The UK’s national exemption for Australia and the US provided under its draft AUKUS Open General Export Licence; and 

    ·         The US’ national exemption for Australia and the UK from the International Traffic in Arms Regulations and the Export Administration Regulations. 

      

    This event is designed to offer the industry, higher education and research sectors – the ones utilising these exemptions – withthe knowledge and practical understanding of the new legislation and exemptions. With trilateral consultation of each partner’s exemptions underway until 31 May 2024, it will also facilitate meaningful discussion and consultation with stakeholders to gain insights into their interests and concerns, and ensure the licence-free environment is fit-for-purpose. 


    The briefing will be held in Adelaide on 20 May and in Sydney on 21 May 2024. There is also the option to attend the briefings online.
